How Custom Planters Are Made

Custom planters are not as difficult to create as a person might think. A form is developed from which to make the planter, and it is possible to produce in various ways to add charm and structure to the design. Almost any container can be used to create the form. A two piece form is usually best for adding extra interior support.

Usually, custom forms of this type, also known as custom shapes, are prepared from stick lumber or plywood. Many differing designs may be created this way. In order to keep unwanted texture from showing up on the planter, garbage bags are often used to line the form. This also makes it easier to remove the planter from the mold when it is ready. Various types of concretes can be used in custom planter making.

Once the form is prepared, the concrete mixture must be made. Once water is added, other decorations could be mixed in as well. Dyes or solid colorant materials can be added if desired. The mixture must be swirled around until it reaches a soft butter consistency. This can all be done in a wheelbarrow or any type of a large container. Once the substance is ready, it will be poured into the form. Pressure around the sides and on the bottom creates well designated edges. Lastly, the interior form will be inserted and pressed into place.

A small trowel is used to smooth out any inconsistencies in the top of the planter. The material will need to set for about 30 minutes before the interior form could be removed. The next step is to make drainage holes for water that will be poured into the planter. Depending on the size of the planter and expected amount of watering, the drainage holes can vary in size and number. A trowel tip can be a useful tool in making these holes.

Imperfections as well as seams can be eliminated by light standing, but the form should not be dry. These imperfections can be smoothed by gently scuffing them. The planter is then wrapped loosely by using a tarp. The planter can as well be kept in a covered place to prevent dampness or water particles from it.

After the planter has been covered, leave it for approximately 10 days before watering it, adding soil or placing plants in it. They look attractive and fully utilize their space. They can also be made using recycled or ready-made materials.

They come in different designs, for instance, boxed veggies. These can hold many flowers as well as herbs and make a drought-plagued compound look fascinating. They’re made using strong boxes which cannot be destroyed by extreme downpours, winter season or even sunny conditions. The planters are broad and deep to allow any type of plants to be grown. They’re suitable for herbs and lettuces.

If concrete is not your style, planters could be formed from old boxes or crates as well. This is an inexpensive way to form a planter. If you don’t have these materials lying around, flea markets and garage sales may be a great source to find them. They should not cost much at all. To help hold in dirt, use plastic to line the boxes. Extra help such as a gravel drainage tray can be added if soggy roots are an issue.

Custom planters are a wonderful way to add both usefulness and attractiveness to your yard. With such a wide range of colors and design available, any space can go from boring to beautiful. There is no better way to care for and enjoy the plants you are growing.
